DAY TRIPS: Greenbackville

Greenbackville, known simply as Greenback to locals, is the Eastern Shore's most northern town. Set on the Chincoteague Bay, it’s named for the abundance of "greenbacks" that were once exchanged for tidal marshland here, giving the owner rights to the plentiful oysters that grew in its warm, shallow waters. It’s a small town with a population of about 150, 200 if you count cats and dogs. The past feels almost present here, as back-in-the-day tales are kept alive by natives whose families go back generations, and are readily shared with a visitor.
